There is Still Time to Mail a Mid-Year Appeal

With just one month left until the end of financial year, those yet to mail an appeal would be forgiven for thinking they have missed the boat. However it’s not too late if you just keep things simple.

Direct Mail appeals are not just about raising money, they are also an important tool for engaging your supporters and keeping your cause top-of-mind. If you don’t ask, your donors may choose to support someone who does and you risk losing loyal supporters to your competitors.

While you won’t have time to design and produce and eye-catching appeal pack, a simple but compelling letter can be crafted in an afternoon. Here are 3 tips for writing a stand-out letter.

  • Choose your words carefully. Without design or gimmicks to hide behind, all the recipients focus will be on the letter content. Choose your words carefully and ensure that everything your write serves a purpose. The letter must be interesting, genuine and most importantly donor-focused.
  • Make it easy to read. Choose a simple, easy-to-read font such as Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri in a size not smaller than 11 point. Keep your paragraphs short and highlight the most important points with bold or underline to draw the reader’s eye.
  • Make it easy to respond. Be very clear and direct about what you are asking for and how you want recipients to respond. Include a donation form and a response envelope. Even if you don’t have a replay paid envelope, a self-addressed one is still an advantage. You may also wish to consider giving people the option to donate online or over the phone, if you have the resources to do so.
