Survive and Thrive During the Coronavirus Crisis

Understandably, there is a lot of uncertainty and worry surrounding the Coronavirus crisis and what it means for the many charities, not-for-profits, and other organisations that rely on fundraising income. While we have never experienced anything quite like this world event, major and unexpected changes to the fundraising environment are nothing new. In its 30 plus years of operation, OKP has supported clients through many challenging times and we have learnt a lot about how to weather a storm.  This is our advice to help your cause survive and thrive during the Coronavirus crisis.

1. Keep Calm and Carry On
Without a doubt, the best advice we can give is to keep going.  We know from experience that those who pause their fundraising efforts will struggle to regain momentum, while organisations that keep going will position themselves for growth.

2. Accentuate the positive
Don’t waste time mourning lost opportunities.¬† Put your energy into identifying new ones.¬† With increasing numbers of people in isolation and working from home, you have a captive audience online.¬† History has shown that in challenging and unpredictable times, generosity grows and people yearn for something positive they can influence.¬†¬†

3. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater
While some organisations are feeling they will need to change strategy, such drastic measures are likely unnecessary.  In many cases a change of approach, activities or priorities will be enough to see you through the crisis.

4. United we stand, divided we fall
There is nothing like a crisis to bring people together and bolster a sense of community and solidarity. As an industry we need to support each other and put camaraderie before competition. We need to keep promoting generosity and giving and ensure once the Coronavirus has passed, we are all in a strong position to advance our causes.
