Christmas is a time when our minds drift to the preparations for our extravagant Christmas feasts. But sadly many Australian’s don’t know where their next meal is coming from let alone whether they will enjoy a meal on Christmas Day.
Thankfully, as a nation we are blessed with a generous heart and some amazing organisations that make Christmas a little brighter for those doing things tough. The list of charities helping families and individuals in need is extensive and their helping hand reaches out all year round not just at Christmas.
As you are preparing your Christmas feast why not have a little less on your plate and support some of these incredible agencies make a difference to the life of others. Here’s a list of some of the Australian organisations providing thousands of meals for Aussies doing it tough, let’s support some of them this Christmas.
Exodus Foundation’s food services provide 1,000s of nutritious free meals for disadvantaged and homeless Australians 7 days a week, 365 days a year through their highly regarded and well known Loaves and Fishes Restaurant, food vans and their renowned Christmas Day lunch.
Food Bank is the largest organising relieving hunger in Australia by providing other charities with the food they need to feed the hungry in their area of need. Food Bank work as the go-between, organising products from food producers, then making the products available to aid agencies across Australia.
OzHarvest operates nationally specialising in redistributing food from supermarkets, hotels, airports, wholesalers, farmers, corporate events and catering companies. They are also establishing a rescued food supermarket.
Red Cross works with many communities and organisations across Australia helping to ensure people have access to healthy food through breakfast clubs, community gardens, Meals on Wheels and Soup Patrol.
The Salvation Army have always been at the forefront of community relief in Australia. Every Christmas they provide food hampers and gifts to families in need.
SecondBite redistributes surplus fresh produce to hundreds of community food programs and run programs to assist the organisations on a local level.
St Vincent de Paul Society
St Vincent de Paul Society provide more than just food, they also bring friendship to people in their homes as well as the Vinnies Soup Vans that support the homeless in many parts of Australia.
Wesley Mission provide food parcels through their Food for Families project, community meals and emergency meals services in various locations across Australia.
