Thanks to the proliferation of free and low cost online survey tools, seeking the perspective of your key stakeholders has never been quicker or easier. However, this valuable tool is still largely underutilised particularly when it comes to supporting a feasibility study.
When contemplating a new campaign, project or program, it is essential to learn as much as possible about the people whose support you will require to succeed. Surveys are an effective way to seek input from both internal stakeholders (staff, board, volunteers etc) and external stakeholders (donors, prospective supports, members of the public) and learn more about their inclination and capacity to be involved. Online surveys enable you to reach more people within a short time frame and gather a larger range of valuable information including perceptions, motivations, values, areas of interest, preferences and demographics.
In addition to providing information and insight, surveys are an excellent way to engage stakeholders and inspire their support. Being involved at the early stage of a new campaign or project can make an internal stakeholder more engaged in the process and an external stakeholder more likely to contribute.
The important thing to remember when conducting an online survey is that the quality of the questions you ask, will determine the quality of the answers you receive. Knowing what to ask and how to ask it can be daunting, but don’t let it stop you. The beauty of online surveys is that they are easy to refine. If doing your surveys in house, we suggest starting with a smaller sample or sub-group, so that you can adapt as you go. Alternatively you could engage an experienced agency, like OKP, to design and conduct the survey on your behalf. This approach can often lead to more accurate information, from people who may temper responses given directly to an organisation.
At OKP, we have refined and perfected our use of online surveys over recent years and are happy to share our experiences with anyone looking to survey their way to success. Just give us a call on 1300 721 799 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
