Happy International Volunteer Day. The Giving Trends ‘Viva La Volunteers’ is now ready to download!
Monday the 5th December 2016 is International Volunteer Day. A day celebrating the contribution of volunteers around the world. The positive impact of volunteering for both the volunteers and the organisations they serve are well documented. But volunteering also has an important role to play in building strong communities.
Nothing changes a community for the better like volunteering. Whether you are volunteering for a charity, school, hospital or sports club, doing good connects you with others in meaningful ways. It creates and cultivates a community that cares.
Volunteering is the glue that bind a community together, making it more resilient when faced with challenges. A community that encourages volunteering can be confident it will have people willing and able to pitch in and help when the need arises.
People that volunteer report feeling more connected to their community and the place where they live. Volunteering also helps bring different segments of the community together, and forms bonds between people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Experts agree that fostering a sense of belonging among community member is crucial when it comes to good mental health and overall well-being.
