The holiday season is meant to be a time of peace and joy, but every time I see Christmas decorations in the shops or a countdown on Facebook, I feel slightly panicked at how quickly the year is coming to an end. It is such a busy time personally and professionally, that we could all benefit from stopping, breathing and thinking about how to calmly approach the final quarter of 2015.
While it can seem like there is a lot to do, and not enough time to do it in, focussing on these key areas will hopefully see you achieve your goals for the year….
The season of giving is one of the best times to ask for a donation but it is also one of the most competitive. You will need to carefully consider the most effective way to engage your supporters and come up with a compelling proposition for your appeal. While it can be tempting to go for flash in order to stand out from the crowd, nothing is more powerful than a genuine, well-written, donor-focussed letter. It is therefore worth considering outsourcing the writing of your appeal letter to a donor communications expert (hint: we have several on our team at OKP). Outsourcing is also an option for those who have not yet started planning an appeal and are in danger of not getting anything out.
Thanking Your Supporters
Now is the perfect time to start thinking about how you will thank your donors and volunteers for their support throughout the year. The more personal the thank-you, the more effective it will be. Why not designate a call-a-donor day and enlist your staff and board in the task of calling donors and personally thanking them for their support. Personal interaction with your donors, not only helps them feel more valued and appreciated, it gives you the opportunity to learn more about your supporter and sometimes gain valuable feedback on their experience supporting your organisation.
Motivating Your Staff
The end of year is also a great time to let your staff know how much their hard-work and dedication is appreciated. Take some time as a team to reflect on your achievements and celebrate your successes. If possible, involve your staff in setting goals for the next year and ask for feedback on how you can better support them in the coming year. It can be tempting to slow down towards the very end of the year, so you will need to ensure you motivate your staff to maintain their momentum and keep making the most of every opportunity that presents itself.
