Are You Major Gift Ready?

In a recent discussion with a third sector leader, the topic of major gifts came up. He had read the Giving Trends Special Investigation “Rise of the Mega Gift” and wanted to know if I thought his charity had the capacity to attract a multi-million dollar donation. While I would have loved to say “yes”, in all honesty my answer had to be “I don’t know”. Determining capacity to attract major gifts is a complex question that is best answered with the help of a feasibility study.

A feasibility study is a tool used by fundraisers all around the world to determine readiness and maximise opportunities for success. A study generally involves an examination of your goals, organisational capacity and key environmental factors. It also looks at how your organisation is viewed by its stakeholders and identifies potential donors, their inclinations and their capacity to contribute.

Conducting a feasibility study provides valuable intelligence that not only lets you know if you should proceed with a major gift program, but how you should proceed. It will help you to get all of your ducks in a row and design a program that minimises wasted resources and maximises contributions.

While it is certainly possible to conduct a feasibility study in-house, using an external resource like O’Keefe and Partners, will allow you to benefit from a fresh and objective perspective, as well as our extensive major gift experience. It is a small investment that will ensure you exploit every opportunity for success and avoid costly and potentially embarrassing mistakes.
